MIH Recommended Powertrain Standard Ver. 1.0

The MIH Consortium has established a powertrain standard featuring a 3-in-1 form factor integrating the traction motor, inverter, and single-speed gear. This compact and efficient system sets a benchmark for integration and efficiency in the EV industry.

Through standardizing the powertrain, we aim to meet the diverse needs of powertrain suppliers, OEMs, and end users:

  • End users expect high-performance vehicles with updateable features(*) that extend the life of the vehicle. (* SDM: Software Defined Motor)

  • OEMs require a competitive powertrain with minimal design changes on the vehicle side.

  • Suppliers need standards to reduce development costs and enhance adaptability to different vehicles and markets.

Key components of the 3-in-1 powertrain standard include:

  • 3-in-1 efficiency standard

The 3-in-1 efficiency standard is based on the power module and WLTC driving cycle.

IGBT power module : 90%@CY2025, 91%@CY2027

SiC power module : 92%@CY2025, 94%@CY2027

  • Traction motor standard

The standard of the motor is mainly divided into output power, wiring, cooling method, stator diameter, magnet and power density. By increasing the slot filling rate of the winding and optimizing the magnet configuration design, the size can be made more compact and the power density of the motor can be increased. In addition, the standardization of various specifications to match different sizes and interfaces ensures compatibility for a wide range of applications, making integration and interchange easier.

The initial version outlines three standard stator diameter sizes that correspond to six different power ranges. The winding process includes flat wire (hairpin) and round wire (flat wire is used when the power is above 100kW or the quantity is more than 200k/year). The cooling method stipulates that 50kW or less is air-cooled, 50-100kW is water-cooled, and 100kW or more is oil-cooled. Magnets are divided into permanent magnets and non-magnetic EESM motors. Power density is defined in terms of power per volume or weight ratio.

  • Inverter standard

For inverter standard, the specifications of SiC power modules and film capacitor components are critical to product performance, durability and longevity. In addition, it is also necessary to integrate OTA update functions, functional safety and network security functions. OTA updates ensure vehicles receive the latest software improvements, improving performance and extending vehicle life. Functional safety (ASIL-C/D) is necessary to prevent failures and ensure reliable operation. Cybersecurity is critical to protect against potential threats and ensure the integrity and security of the system.

  • Gear reducer standard

The standard of gearboxes is mainly based on the vehicle's maximum speed, motor rpm and torque, Generally, the gear ratio range is determined when the gear center distance is fixed. The gear lubrication circuit also needs to consider the cooling design of the motor.

Through the standardization of the entire assembly, it is necessary to define the interfaces in various fields, such as high-voltage connection interfaces, low-voltage connection interfaces, communications (CAN bus), water-cooling circuits and thermal management to make the standard more complete in the next round.
